Creating Easy Meal Plans

With today’s hectic lifestyles, it is easy to resort to eating out, which can quickly lead to weight gain and health problems. Fortunately, with a little time, you can create convenient meal plans packed full of nutritious foods. Follow these three basic steps to create a rotation of easy, healthy meals for your family.

  1. Planning

First, compile a list of recipes. A good time-saving strategy is to create a full month’s worth of convenient meal plans at once. Try to find about 10-14 recipes to start. These will become your go-to recipes for the first month. By keeping it simple rather than introducing too many new dishes at once, you will be more likely to stick to the meal plan. After a few months, you can rotate out some of your recipes for new ones.

When selecting recipes, look for those that include common ingredients and in-season produce. Remember, you are trying to create easy meals. At least half of the recipes you choose should take 30 minutes or less to prepare.

  1. Shopping

Now that you are armed with delicious recipes, it is time to make go grocery shopping. First, inventory your pantry and create a list of any ingredients you do not already have on hand. Round out your shopping list with some grab-and-go snack options, such as fruit, nuts, and string cheese.

  1. Preparing

When you get home from the grocery store, take some time to prepare your ingredients for the meals ahead. Here are a few tips to make the most of your prep time:

  • Clean, chop, and dice produce for the week.
  • Check recipes before you begin and prep common ingredients in a single batch.
  • Make meal kits by storing all the prepared ingredients together.
  • Be sure to label your kits and ingredients.

Convenient meal plans are a snap with a little planning. By investing some time to create a meal plan and prepare ingredients, you can begin each week knowing that you have a ready source of healthy food. Both your health and your wallet will be in better shape because of it.
